On Sunday May 5th, 2013 at approximately 1:00 p.m. a kidnapping of three people occurred at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, located at 1403 E. First Street in Mount Pleasant.
A mother and two children were taken by knife-point by a Jesus Ramirez, 22, from the parking lot at the church and driven to a county residence where the mother and one child were released. The suspect kept a 14-year old victim, Ruby Zavala.
The suspect vehicle was recovered at 4:45 p.m. on County Road 2500, between the town of Winfield and Lake Monticello West of Mount Pleasant in Titus County.
Mount Pleasant Police Chief Wayne Isbell said “We are doing an active search at this time.” An Amber Alert has been issued.
Sheriff Tim Ingram said Ramirez’ truck was hidden and found after an extensive search by sheriff’s deputies.
Both Ingram and Isbell said the way the vehicle was abandoned and hidden suggests someone picked up Ramirez. Isbell said Monday morning the search now includes any acquaintances of Ramirez who may be hiding him and his victim.
In addition to the FBI Child Abduction Unit, the Mount Pleasant police are being assisted in their search by local law enforcement agencies from Titus County – including the Titus County Sheriff’s office – as well as law enforcement personnel from Dallas, Tyler and Texarkana.
The case is being led by the Mount Pleasant Police Department, because the kidnapping at St. Michael’s Catholic Church happened in the city limits.
The kidnapped victim, Ruby Zavala, is a Hispanic Female, 14 Years of Age (Date of Birth 8-31-1998), 5’ and 120 lbs. with Black Hair, Brown Eyes. She was last seen wearing a white top, blue jeans, and tan shoes.
The suspect, Jesus Ramirez, is described as a Hispanic Male, 22 Years of Age (Date of Birth 11-30-1989), 5’9”, 165 lbs. with black hair and brown eyes. His clothing was unknown, except he was wearing a black ball cap.
The suspect is armed and considered dangerous and mentally ill; he is known to have an obsession with the victim. He was recently released from Terrell state hospital and may be suicidal, said Isbell.
Ramirez has an extensive criminal history, and has been in the Titus County Jail a dozen times in the past six years.
Ramirez was most recently arrested for sexual assault on March 27. He was released on $25,000 bond, but was later sent to the Terrell State Hospital, said Ingram.
