The Sheriff's Office found surveillance video from a local store that shows Buenfil with McDowell on the morning of Dec. 27. McDowell told deputies that later in the day he was in the forest with Buenfil using drugs when his truck became stuck. One year later, search continues for missing Lacey Marie Buenfil
January 2, 2013 OCALA NATIONAL FOREST — A year later, family and friends still continue to search for Lacey Marie Buenfil, a young mother of three from Lady Lake. Buenfil, who was 25, vanished around Christmastime. She was seen last in Ocala National Forest with a 51-year-old acquaintance, Terry K. McDowell, who told Lake deputies they were using drugs when his truck got stuck in sand on Railroad Grade Road near Altoona. Buenfil headed toward State Road 19 to find help but was never seen again, according to McDowell. Malynda Downing doesn't believe her best friend is alive. Too much time has elapsed since she went missing. "You get so mentally drained. You hear so many stories," Downing said. She said she has spent many weekends driving up from West Palm Beach to pass out fliers and search the forest for her friend, an outgoing and friendly woman she has known since they were teenagers. Downing said her friend had started using methamphetamine earlier that year after she split up with her daughters' father and had told her she wanted to quit. "Lacey's life wasn't defined by the drugs. That's a mistake she made — anyone can slip into that. She deserves to be found." Buenfil's daughters, ages 6, 4 and 2, need closure, said Downing, 25. Every time she visits them, Downing said, the girls ask if she's located Buenfil, who worked as a certified nursing assistant at a Leesburg hospital. "It's been quite a roller coaster for the girls," she said. "They have a hard time understanding." Deputies labeled the disappearance "suspicious." They used bloodhounds and helicopters to comb the forest after they discovered she had gone missing. Volunteers also searched the area and passed out fliers to no avail. The case remains under investigation, Lake sheriff's Sgt. Jim Vachon said. Loved ones haven't given up, Downing said. They started a Facebook page, "Praying for Lacey," where some of the nearly 1,000 people following it have expressed sadness and frustration at not being able to find Buenfil. "One year Lacey! We never thought it would get to this!," one message reads "…We will find the answers our Lacey Marie. We promise you! FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS." In February, Downing said a sign with the missing woman's picture was posted by a nearby fish camp, and volunteers continued to scour the area. She also appeared on a billboard in Orlando that featured images of other missing women, including Michelle Parker, a mother who vanished Nov. 17, 2011. "We're not leaving until we find answers," Downing said. elogonzalez@tribune.com or 352-742-5917 articles.orlandosentinel.com/2013-01-02/news/os-lk-lacey-buenfil-missing-20130102_1_lacey-marie-buenfil-railroad-grade-road-michelle-parker
