Missing Teen: Nikki Peress, 15, grand-niece of HLN's Jane Velez-Mitchell, missing from Burning Man festival August 31, 2012 The 15-year-old grand-niece of HLN news anchor Jane Velez-Mitchell has been missing since Wednesday when she was last seen in the kids area of the Burning Man festival in Nevada. Nikki Peress, a New York City resident, was attending the festival with her father, a musician, and family friends. The group was camping in the "Kidsville" area. According to Velez-Mitchell, Nikki left the camp site after an argument over loud music on Wednesday morning. "She was trying to sleep and someone was playing music," says Velez-Mitchell, whose niece is Nikki's mother. "She stormed off and everyone just assumed she'd be back in a few minutes." But Nikki never returned. Velez-Mitchell says security at the event and local law enforcement have been notified, and although there have been reported sightings of the teen, she has not yet been found. "She looks older than 15, and unfortunately she's not as sophisticated as she thinks she is," says Velez-Mitchell. "It's just terrifying because I cover these stories and it's gotten to a scary time. It's been more than 48 hours." The Burning Man festival, which takes place each year in Nevada's Black Rock desert, draws tens of thousands of people. Nikki was last seen wearing a green shirt with midriff showing, short blue jean shorts and brown shoes. She has a small nose ring, a belly piercing and wears several friendship bracelets. She was wearing a green Kidsville bracelet with the word Kidsville crossed out. Anyone with information on Nikki Peress's whereabouts is asked to contact the Pershing Sheriff's Office at 775-273-5111. m.cbsnews.com/fullstory.rbml?catid=57504631&feed_id=999&videofeed=999

Missing Teen Reunited With Parents at Burning Man 15-Year old Nikki Peress reunited with parents 24 hours after being reported missing. Black Rock City, Nev. — Burning Man organizers, in conjunction with local law enforcement, successfully located Nicole “Nikki” Peress, a 15-year-old girl who had been reported missing at the event Thursday afternoon. Following an investigation by the Pershing County Sheriff’s Department, Peress’s disappearance was classified as a runaway child. When Peress was reported missing, Burning Man initiated its missing child protocol, including an Amber Alert and citywide shutdown operations, whereby all outbound traffic and airport departures are halted. Burning Man’s Black Rock Rangers posted flyers throughout Black Rock City and distributed public service announcements via Burning Man Information Radio. “The system worked,” said Marian Goodell, Director of Communications for Burning Man. “We have a system set up to reunite minors who have become involuntarily separated from their parents, and it’s also effective for voluntarily-separated ones. This is a very tight-knit community, and it’s gratifying that our participants really step up to help in situations like this. We’re very happy that Nikki has been returned to her parents.” Peress was found Friday afternoon when a participant recognized her, and brought her to a Burning Man medical station, whereupon she was reconnected with her parents. About Burning Man: For 22 years, the Black Rock Desert outside Reno, Nev., has been home to the increasingly popular and influential Burning Man arts event. Started on a beach in San Francisco in 1986, the event now attracts more than 60,000 participants annually, from every U.S. state and 22 countries.
