Dana Lauren Bonanno: Mom recounts events, other texts from missing woman
Aug. 5, 2013Three days before Dana Lauren Bonanno went missing, she had texted her mother, asking her to call 911 without explanation, her mother said.
Donna O’Connor of Patterson said she texted her daughter back, saying she was on the road headed to Florida and that Bonanno should call 911 if there was a problem. Bonanno responded curtly, O’Connor said, and she didn’t hear back from her again that night, July 19.
“I’ve heard her in an emergency and that didn’t sound like an emergency,” O’Connor said Monday.
On the night she disappeared, July 22, Bonanno had also told her mother she thought her two male roommates had been looking through her personal belongings and talking about her.
That was shortly before 10 p.m., she said.
O’Connor said she told her daughter to call police if she was worried.
Apparently Bonanno did not do that. Just over an hour later, at 11:10 p.m., she sent her mother a text message saying “I’m scared.” That was the last O’Connor heard from her.
Bonanno, 33, has lived with her two roommates for the past six months in an apartment in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn.
Her mother said Bonanno’s roommates had no idea Bonanno had these concerns about them.
O’Connor said she had not been overly concerned with Bonanno’s actions before her disappearance.
“She has anxiety and I think not working has made it worse,” O’Connor said.
Bonnano was laid off from her job as a paralegal at A&E Networks in April.
She was an aspiring music producer and part of a group of friends called Supporting Our Underground Properly, promoting music events throughout the city.
A friend, Michael Annunziata, is raising money with the hope of offering a reward for information on the missing woman.
Annunziata, who grew up in Putnam with Bonanno, started the fund this week aiming to raise a minimum of $10,000 as a reward for information “leading to successfully finding Dana.”
As of 5 p.m. Monday, the reward fund had $625. It will run through Aug. 12.
“I talked to a private investigator and he said it helps out a lot in these cases,” said Annunziata, who grew up in Mahopac. “She’s a really sweet, caring, wonderful girl. A heart of gold.”
Friends have also taken to social media and posting missing person fliers throughout New York City to help police in the search.
Annunziata said he last saw Bonanno on July 21 at her loft apartment. He said Bonanno normally just went out on weekends and if there had been an event she planned to attend that Monday night, she would have told him about it.
“I’m pretty upset,” said Annunziata. “I’m hoping she just ran away but she showed no indication of that.”
O’Connor supports Annunziata’s fundraising efforts.
“In my heart I know she is alive,” O’Connor said. “I cannot for the life of me imagine that no one heard or saw her that night. It’s a very active street. All we want is for people to please give information.”
