Amber Alert out for siblings feared to be with suspected killerBy Joseph Serna August 6, 2013 A statewide Amber Alert remained in effect Tuesday morning as authorities continued to hunt for a suspected killer from San Diego who may have abducted two children. James Lee DiMaggio is suspected of killing Christina Anderson, 44, of Lakeside and kidnapping one or both of her children: Hannah Anderson, 16, and Ethan Anderson, 8. Christina Anderson's body was found Sunday night in the burning rubble of a house and garage in the rural community of Boulevard in eastern San Diego County, authorities said. She had been killed, they said. The two children were likely abducted about 5 p.m. on Saturday, according to an Amber Alert notice on the California Highway Patrol website. The remains of a child were also found in the rubble, but the child's identity and cause of death have not been determined, said Lt. Glenn Giannantonio of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department's homicide detail. It is believed that DiMaggio has one or both of Anderson's children with him in his blue Nissan Versa, which has a California license plate: 6WCU986, Giannantonio said. Authorities said he may be trying to get to Canada. DiMaggio is the owner of the home in Boulevard and had a "close platonic relationship" with Christina Anderson, authorities said. Hannah Anderson is described as 5-foot-7, 115 pounds with blond hair, blue eyes, a belly button ring, nose stud and pierced ears. Ethan Anderson is described as 4-foot-11, 65 pounds with sandy blond hair. DiMaggio is described as 5-foot-9, 150 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the homicide detail at (858) 974-2321 or (858) 565-5200, or San Diego County Crime Stoppers, (888) 580-8477. www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-amber-alert-two-children-suspected-killer-20130806,0,6717755.story

Amber Alert: James Lee Dimaggio Suspected Of Killing Woman, Abducting Her Children (PHOTO)AN DIEGO — The husband of a woman whose body was found in a burned house near the U.S.-Mexico border said Tuesday that he knew the man suspected of killing his wife and abducting one or both of their children. The disclosure came as a manhunt for James Lee DiMaggio, 40, expanded. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department has said DiMaggio and the victim, 44-year-old Christina Anderson, had been in a close, platonic relationship. Brett Anderson said he knew DiMaggio "very well" but declined to answer further questions as he arrived from out of town to meet with investigators. He did confirm that he had fathered the two missing children – 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and 8-year-old Ethan Anderson. Brett Anderson said the couple was married but declined to elaborate further on the status of the relationship. Authorities found Christina Anderson's body on Sunday night in the rural home of DiMaggio in Boulevard, a remote hamlet 65 miles east of San Diego. They also found the remains of a child whose identity and cause of death were undetermined. Sheriff's Lt. Glenn Giannantonio didn't respond to a message seeking further details. An Amber Alert advised freeway motorists, television viewers and mobile phone subscribers about a blue Nissan Versa with California license plates that DiMaggio was believed to be driving. The California Highway Patrol said the suspect could be headed to Texas or Canada. The FBI joined the search and the Amber Alert was later extended to Mexico's Baja California state, which borders Boulevard. Authorities found the body of a Christina Anderson near a dead dog when they extinguished flames at the home. The child's body was found later as they sifted through rubble. Christina Anderson grew up with her mother and stepfather in the east San Diego suburb of Santee and aspired to a career in child psychology, said her ex-husband, James Chatfield of La Grande, Ore. The marriage lasted four years, until 1992, and Chatfield said he lost touch. "She was a high school sweetheart," he said. "It was a marriage of convenience that just didn't work out." Chatfield said he helped Anderson's current husband move to The Dalles, Ore., in the early 1990s but they lost contact. www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/06/amber-alert-james-lee-dimaggio-_n_3711084.html

Search continues for 2 missing children believed to have been abducted by James Lee DiMaggioPolice: Suspect in blue Nissan Versa, 6WCU986
BOULEVARD, Calif. - A search was underway Tuesday for a man suspected of kidnapping two missing children, killing their mother and setting fire to a home in Boulevard, where the woman's body was found. Hannah Anderson, 16, and Ethan Anderson, 8, may have been taken by James Lee DiMaggio, 40, who is believed to have been in a "close platonic relationship" with their mother, 44-year-old Christina Anderson of Lakeside, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff's Department told 10News, the search was expanded nationwide and the suspect is believed to be traveling to Texas or Canada. Anderson's body and a dead dog were found as fire crews were extinguishing the blaze at DiMaggio's home and detached garage at 2071 Ross Ave. shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, sheriff's Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said. The body of a child was also found as crews searched through the rubble of one of the burned buildings, he said. Authorities are not identifying the body. However, a Facebook post by a woman who says she is Anderson's sister claims investigators have identified the remains as Anderson and her son.
Investigators determined that Anderson was the victim of homicide, Giannantonio said without elaboration. How the child died was not immediately determined, he said. An amber alert was issued after the disappearance of Hannah and Ethan Anderson. Investigators believe one or both of them were abducted by DiMaggio, who may be driving a 2013 blue Nissan Versa, California license plate 6WCU986. DiMaggio is 5 feet 9, 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Hannah is 5 feet 7, 115 pounds, with blond hair, blue eyes, a belly button ring, nose stud and pierced ears. Ethan is 4 feet 11, 64 pounds, with sandy blond hair. All three are white. Giannantonio said they have requested FBI assistance in locating them. On Monday, 10News spoke with DiMaggio's ex-wife, who did not want to be identified. She said DiMaggio met Anderson when she worked together with her as a receptionist more than a decade ago. She said DiMaggio was best friends with Anderson's husband. She described DiMaggio as an introvert who enjoyed video games but was never known to be violent. She divorced him in 2003 because she said he was getting distant. 10News learned that a vigil is planned at 7 p.m. at El Capitan High School for Hannah and Ethan. Investigators from the sheriff's Homicide Detail, Bomb/Arson and Crime Lab are participating in the investigation. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the children or suspect should call the San Diego Sheriff's Department at (858) 565-5200, or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.www.10news.com/news/search-on-for-lakeside-2-missing-children-believed-to-be-with-suspect-james-lee-dimaggio-amber-alert-boulevard-080613

Friends: Amber alert suspect James DiMaggio had crush on missing teen Friends also say DiMaggio is avid camperSAN DIEGO - Two close friends and their mother told 10News Hannah Marie Anderson were disturbed by James DiMaggio, the man accused of abducting Hannah and her brother.Angelina Amati said the family called DiMaggio "Uncle Jim," and added that she believed DiMaggio was depressed because he was about to lose his home.Authorities remain on the lookout for DiMaggio, with a nationwide Amber Alert issued Monday for Hannah and her 8-year-old brother, Ethan. The alert included the possibility of DiMaggio going to either Texas or Canada. Amati said DiMaggio is an avid camper. Amati's daughters told 10News that about 10 days ago, DiMaggio told Hannah he had a crush on her. The girls did not share that information with their mother until after the Amber Alert. (See the interviews with the Amaits on 10News At 5:00.)Amati said there was never any indication DiMaggio had any romantic feelings for Christine "Tina" Anderson, Hannah and Ethan's mother, whose body was found in DiMaggio's burned Boulevard home.
A second body was found in the burned-out home, but authorities have not made a positive identification. The family friends said Brett Anderson, the missing children's father, had left the area six months ago to take a job in Tennessee. Amati said the family thought DiMaggio was going to help take care of them while Brett Anderson was away.Early Tuesday afternoon, it was believed Anderson had returned from Tennessee, but that has not yet been confirmed. Team 10 discovered DiMaggio has had previous run-ins with the law. Read more on that here. The AMBER alerts are being broadcast on our local TV and electronic billboards. This is an odd one with a 15+ yr family friend being the suspect. Hope they find Hannah safe. Sheriff's: DiMaggio may have explosivesBy Pauline Repard - AUG. 8, 2013 - Updated 1:28 P.M. EAST COUNTY — A Boulevard man suspected of two murders and kidnapping may have his car rigged with explosives, sheriff’s investigators said Thursday. “We want to warn members of the public that the vehicle and any place Mr. (James) DiMaggio may have been could be in danger due to booby traps or explosives,” homicide Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said. The Sheriff’s Department released this recent photo of homicide and kidnap suspect James Lee DiMaggio. He said he was not yet prepared to explain why they believe DiMaggio has access to explosives. In other developments Thursday, more FBI agents are joining sheriff’s investigators in the massive manhunt for DiMaggio. The Sheriff’s Department is also adding staffing to help field the 100s of tips being phoned in from all over the country, sheriff’s Capt. Duncan Fraser said. “We’re checking them all,” Fraser said. Investigators say they believe James Lee DiMaggio, 40, killed Christina “Tina” Anderson, 44, of Lakeside, and possibly her son Ethan, 8, then kidnapped her daughter Hannah, 16, over the weekend. DiMaggio also is suspected of setting fire to his log cabin house and detached garage near Old Highway 80 on Sunday night. Anderson’s body was found in one of the buildings after firefighters extinguished the flames, and sheriff’s arson investigators found a child’s body, badly burned, in another of the buildings. An autopsy conducted this week confirmed that the body was that of a boy about 8 years old, but his exact identity was not established, Giannantonio said. “It’s possible we may never be able to identify the remains because they were so badly burned,” Giannantonio said. An arrest warrant for DiMaggio has been issued on two counts of murder and for kidnapping. An Amber Alert for Hannah and Ethan was issued statewide on Monday, and on Wednesday expanded to Oregon, Nevada and Washington. Two possible sightings of DiMaggio were reported in Oregon on Wednesday, but authorities there were not able to find the man who was seen, Fraser said. “This guy could be anywhere,” Fraser said of DiMaggio. “He could be headed to Mexico or Canada.” Since the case has made national news, Fraser said, tips have come in from as far away as New York, where someone called Crime Stoppers to report seeing a man who resembled DiMaggio getting on a bus. The information was forwarded to New York police, but led nowhere. Fraser said with the additional publicity generated by the Amber Alerts, investigators expect more out-of-state tips, so they asked for additional FBI resources. “The FBI has been with us from the very beginning,” Fraser said. “More agents, possibly six or eight, will be with us here at headquarters.” Fraser said tipsters may call sheriff’s investigators at (858) 974-2321, where two people will be on hand to take information, or (858) 565-5200 after hours. Anonymous calls may be made to Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. DiMaggio is believed to have driven away from his home in his blue, four-door, 2013 Nissan Versa with California license plate 6WCU986. Fraser said the last contact that investigators know of between DiMaggio and Hannah was after 4 p.m. Saturday. She, her mother and brother were planning to spend the weekend at DiMaggio’s house, he said. Investigators said DiMaggio and Anderson had a platonic friendship. The father of her children, Brett Anderson, was best friends with DiMaggio for years. Brett Anderson, who had moved to Tennessee, flew to San Diego this week and issued an emotion-filled public plea for DiMaggio to release Hannah unharmed. Progress. DiMaggio, girl sighted camping in IdahoSAN DIEGO — The Boulevard man accused of two murders, arson and a child kidnapping may be in a wilderness area of Idaho, authorities said Friday. San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said horseback riders saw two people, believed to be James Lee DiMaggio, 40, and alleged kidnap victim Hannah Anderson, 16, around noon on Wednesday, and his car was discovered hidden under brush about 8 a.m. Friday. An Ada County spokeswoman said DiMaggio's blue Nissan Versa was found in a very remote, mountainous area in Valley County, near Cascade, called the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Gore said he is sending San Diego investigators to Idaho. He also said authorities there will examine the car for explosives. The man and young woman seen in the wilderness appeared in good health and were camping, Gore said. He said the two had backpacks and a tent. Hannah's grandfather, Christopher Saincome of Camarillo, said he spoke to the teenager's father earlier Friday and they are both relieved to hear that she may be alive and well. "That's good," Saincome said when a reporter told him details of the Idaho discoveries. "I'm so glad. That's great. I'm happy they found her alive." Saincome said he last saw Hannah, her mother and brother in Lakeside about five weeks ago, and everything was fine with the family. He said he believes Hannah would never consent to be along with DiMaggio, and that "she has nothing to do with this" trip into Idaho. They were seen by the riders, who returned from their trip at sunset Wednesday and then heard about the Amber Alert on Hannah, so they notified local authorities. Because of the national attention the case has been receiving in the media, the local law enforcement "put two and two together" and contacted the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Gore said. DiMaggio and Hannah were about six miles from where the Versa was found, Gore said. "As far as we know, it didn't appear (Hannah) was being held against her will," he said. Gore said because Hannah appears to have been spotted alive on Wednesday, there is reason to be optimistic that she will be returned safely to her family. The sheriff's spokeswoman in Idaho, Andrea Dearden, said state, local and federal authorities have surrounded the car and more are headed into the area, with air support. San Diego County sheriff's officials have issued warnings to the public that DiMaggio might have rigged his car with explosives, or has explosives with him. He also had apparently been thinking about the crimes for some time, sheriff’s officials said Friday. “It was obviously a planned event,” San Diego sheriff’s homicide Capt. Duncan Fraser said. He declined to elaborate on why investigators believe that. DiMaggio last posted on his Facebook page a quote from American writer/politician William Mather Lewis. It reads, “The tragedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin it.” There’s likely no way to know what DiMaggio had in mind when he posted that on July 10, but 25 days later the bodies of his longtime friend Christina Anderson, 44, a child who may be her 8-year-old son, Ethan, and her dog were found in the smouldering remnants of DiMaggio’s Boulevard home and garage. The fire was set Sunday. Hannah, who many say DiMaggio was infatuated with, has been missing and presumed to have been kidnapped by the telecommunications technician who works at Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla. ..... .....Saincome, Christina Anderson’s father, told U-T San Diego on Thursday that he believes DiMaggio is guilty of the crimes and planned them ahead. He said his daughter told him the week before that DiMaggio wanted her to bring over her children to say goodbye, because he was losing his home to a foreclosure and moving to Texas. In the meantime, Christina mother and stepfather, Sara and Ralph Britt, told CNN that their family is strong and holding up well, and that they expect to see Hannah again. Sara Britt, wearing a pink T-shirt with her granddaughter’s picture under the words “Pray for Hannah,” had a message for the suspect. “You’ve taken our heart and soul... taken my only child, and please let Hannah go,” she said. The case has baffled family and friends of DiMaggio, who was described by his sister Lora Robinson as a “straight-up guy” who is smart, kind and who cared for Ethan and Hannah Anderson as if they were his own. In an interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan, DiMaggio friend Andrew Spanswick said that he is a therapist who has worked with pedophiles, and that DiMaggio does not fit the profile of someone who preys on children. “He’s nothing like characterized,” Spanswick said. He compared all the speculation about DiMaggio to a Salem witch hunt. “The facts I know are very different.” Spanswick said. DiMaggio’s sister told U-T San Diego on Wednesday that she thinks her brother was the victim of foul play and that he may be dead. Spanswick concurred. “You know, we think that’s probably the most likely outcome that something terrible happened here and other people might have possibly been involved.” Sheriff’s officials agree that the actions they suspect DiMaggio of seem to be out of character, but that they are confident that he committed the crimes. Fraser described the case as one of the “worst ones I’ve seen” in his 32 years in law enforcement. www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/Aug/09/sheriffs-officials-dimaggio-planned-event/?#article-copy

His friend and his sister think he is a victim of foul play?? That would be quite surprising. Sheriff confirms: DiMaggio dead, teen safe in manhunt Sheriff confirms that California murder suspect James DiMaggio is dead and his 16-year-old kidnapping victim Hannah Anderson is safe.
California murder and kidnapping suspect James DiMaggio has been killed and teen Hannah Anderson is safe, San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore said at a press conference. DiMaggio was shot and killed by an FBI tactical agent assigned to a FBI headquarters unit. Hannah was with DiMaggio and was rescued safely at the north end of Morehead Lake in Idaho.
"It truly was a joint effort and I am pleased to stand here today and say that Hannah was successfully rescued and appears to be in pretty good shape," Gore says. Hannah's father was notified. "Obviously he's elated what we found his daughter is alive and plans are being made now to reunite him with his daughter hopefully tomorrow morning," Gore says. "He was very relieved and very excited and looking forward to being reunited with his daughter." Hannah will be taken to a hospital where she will be thoroughly evaluated before any detectives or FBI agents interview her. Her father will be transported to Idaho and hopefully reunited with his daughter tomorrow, he said. The San Diego Sheriff's department was notified that the shootout happened 4:22 p.m. PST. The campsite was spotted from the air and then the ground units were sent into the area which lead to the confrontation.
"Obviously we would've liked Mr. DiMaggio to surrender and face justice in the court of law but that's not going to be the case," Gore says. The intense manhunt and multi-state Amber Alert case has been going on since Sunday. The San Diego Sheriff's Dept. says it appears that DiMaggio, 40, kidnapped Hannah after killing her mother, Christina Anderson, and her brother, Ethan, last weekend. Their bodies were found in DiMaggio's burning California home near the Mexican border Sunday. On Friday night, San Diego County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the remains found in the home matched the DNA of Ethan, 8. Ethan Anderson's remains were not positively identified until Friday night and an Amber Alert was initially issued for both children.
DiMaggio's Nissan Versa, covered with brush and missing its California license plates, was found about five miles from a trailhead into the area Friday morning. Authorities had suspected the car may have been booby-trapped, but no explosives were found in or around the vehicle by a Boise Police Department bomb squad. DiMaggio is considered armed and dangerous, authorities say. The discovery of his car came two days after a man on horseback reported seeing DiMaggio and 16-year-old Hannah in hiking gear and backpacks. Idaho authorities say the rider didn't realize the pair were being sought until he got home and recognized them on news reports.
Some 200 law enforcement officials — mostly FBI agents — had descended on a 320-square-mile area of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Area, a mostly roadless, rugged, heavily wooded forest in central Idaho about 70 miles northeast of Boise. Teams from the Valley County and Ada County Sheriff's departments, U.S Marshals Service, Homeland Security, Border Patrol, Idaho Army National Guard and Idaho State Police were part of the search-and-rescue operations, says Andrea Dearden, an Ada County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman. The Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Area was named after the late four-term Idaho senator, a Boise native who sought the Democratic nomination for president in 1976. At more than 2.3 million acres, it's the second-largest protected wilderness area outside of Alaska., coursing through mountain ranges, deep canyons and the middle fork of the Salmon River, a popular waterway for rafting, kayaking and fishing. DiMaggio, a friend of the Andersons, is an experienced outdoorsman, according to Hannah's father, Brett Anderson, who was separated from his wife and had moved to Tennessee for work. He and DiMaggio, a Scripps Research Institute telecommunications technician, met about 20 years ago. Authorities say DiMaggio is "infatuated" with Hannah.
Brett Anderson said earlier this week that DiMaggio had promised to watch over his family and that his kids had referred to him as "Uncle Jim." www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/08/10/search-for-dimaggio-and-teen-kidnap-victim-centers-on-idaho-wilderness-area/2638423/

Friend: Hannah Anderson discusses kidnapping on social mediaBy Casey Wian, CNN updated 12:28 PM EDT, Wed August 14, 2013 (CNN) -- Hannah Anderson did what any teenage girl would do after a life-changing ordeal: she discussed it with peers online. The 16-year-old fielded anonymous questions on the website ask.fm, where she shared details about her abduction by the man she knew as Uncle Jim, James DiMaggio. She did not want to go with him, and did not escape after she was abducted out of fear he would kill her, she said in the postings. And, she added, she's "absolutely" glad he is dead. Alan MacNabb, whose son is one of Hannah's closest friends, confirmed to CNN Wednesday that the postings on ask.fm were by Hannah. The California teenager was rescued Saturday after family friend DiMaggio held her hostage for a week. This, police say, after he killed her mother and brother. The frantic search for the teenager stretched from southern California to the Idaho wilderness, where she was found at a campsite by a mountain lake. 'He was my dad's best friend'During the session, one user asked her if she wanted to go with DiMaggio. "No, not at all," she said. Why didn't you run? "He would have killed me," she said. Why didn't you tell your parents he creeped you out? "In part, he was my dad's best friend and I didn't want to ruin anything between them," she said. Tied up in a garageHannah shed new light on the night she was kidnapped -- the same night her mother and younger brother were killed and their bodies burned in DiMaggio's house. "How did he separate you from your mom and brother?" a user asked. She said he tied them up in the garage. "How did he keep the fire a secret?" Her response: "He had it set where it would catch on fire at a certain time." DiMaggio threatened to kill her if she fled and brought her at least in part, to help carry equipment in the wilderness, she said. Glad kidnapper is deadSome questions were brutally blunt. "Did he rape you? Hannah declined to answer that question. "I'm not allowed to talk about it, so don't ask questions about it, thank you," she said. Are you glad he's dead? "Absolutely," she said. Planning funerals....When asked what she would say to Ethan and her mother if she got a chance, her response was a reminder of her trauma. "I wish I could go back in time and risk my life to try and save theirs," she said. "I will never forgive myself for not trying harder to save them." Those who know her say she spent some of her day helping to plan their funerals. Psychotherapist: 'In a numb state'Some experts questioned the wisdom of the online chats. "This is a 16-year-old who's totally traumatized, she's in a state of trauma and so she's not thinking," psychotherapist Wendy Walsh said. "Sometimes in a numb state, you do things that you don't really consider the consequences." The teen even posted a selfie ... a self portrait of one's face posted online. She also engaged in lighter conversation, but even some of that seemed painful. What design did you get on your nails? "Pink for my mom and blue for Ethan," she said, referring to her 8-year-old brother. Ask.fm is a user-fueled, question-and-answer social media site, which claims to have 70 million users worldwide. Users can skip around the site asking people whatever they want, with the end result being profile pages that read like questionnaires. It has recently drawn heavy criticism as a hive of cyberbullying however, following several instances of teenage ask.fm members committing suicide after being harassed on the site. The suicide earlier this month of a 14-year-old British girl prompted UK Prime Minister David Cameron to call for a boycott of ask.fm. Several advertisers have also recently cut ties with the site, which allows users to remain anonymous. Docs: Teen's mom, brother 'tortured & killed'“DiMaggio tortured and killed" Hannah Anderson's mother & brother before setting home on fire, documents state Crowbar found next to body of 44-year-old Christina Anderson, police said James Lee DiMaggio had been shot at least five times, according to a preliminary autopsy report The California man who abducted 16-year-old Hannah Anderson after she left cheerleading practice “tortured and killed” her mother and younger brother before setting his home on fire and fleeing with the teen girl, according to search warrant documents unsealed Wednesday. James Lee DiMaggio, 40, was shot and killed over the weekend by an FBI tactical agent in a remote area of Idaho. A preliminary autopsy report released Wednesday revealed DiMaggio had been shot at least five times. His death ended a massive, weeklong search for Hannah Anderson after the bodies of her mother and brother were discovered inside DiMaggio’s burnt-out Boulevard home on August 4.The documents did not revealed exactly how DiMaggio tortured 44-year-old Christina Anderson and her son 8-year-old Ethan, but they did shed light on how firefighters discovered their bodies in the suspect’s burning home. According to the documents, firefighters noticed smoke billowing from a three-car, detached garage as they attempted to douse the flames coming from DiMaggio’s cabin. Upon entering the garage, a firefighter noticed a green tarp with human feet sticking out, the document stated. The body—which was later identified as 44-year-old Christina Anderson—was lying face down, and the tarp covering her was partially melted to her head, the document added. “A crow bar and what appeared to be blood on the ground” was found next to her head, authorities said. Also in the garage, officials found a medium brown dog under a sleeping bag with “blood near the head,” the document stated.
After securing the garage, officials worked their way through DiMaggio’s home and found “the burnt remains of a child,” which was later identified as 8-year-old Ethan Anderson. “The remains could not be identified at the scene due to their condition,” officials said in the documents.
“DiMaggio tortured and killed his best friend’s wife and eight year old son,” police said in one of the affidavits. “After the double homicide, DiMaggio set the house on fire.” Unable to identify the child’s body found in DiMaggio’s home, authorities issued a nationwide Amber Alert for 8-year-old Ethan Anderson and his 16-year-old sister Hannah the following day. Search warrant documents reveal Hannah Anderson’s cell phone was turned off at about the same time she was last seen leaving cheerleading practice at her high school on the afternoon of August 4. San Diego County Sheriff’s investigators subsequently placed “tap and trace” devices on DiMaggio’s e-mail, Facebook and cell phone accounts as well as Hannah’s phone. The search warrant documents revealed that prior to both Hannah and DiMaggio’s phones being turned off they called each other approximately 13 times.
After her stunning rescue in the Idaho wilderness that ended her week in captivity, it was revealed that Hannah did not know that her mother and brother had been killed until her rescuers told her. Meanwhile, the 16-year-old has decided to go online, specifically to Ask.fm, using the profile name @hannahbanana722, fielding questions from other people on the Q&A social site about her abduction. HLN has confirmed that the account belongs to Hannah Anderson through the father of one of Anderson's friends. www.hlntv.com/article/2013/08/15/docs-dimaggio-tortured-hannah-andersons-mom-brother

Hannah Anderson letters found at kidnap suspect's homeLakeside, California (CNN) -- A handwritten note, handcuff box, camping equipment and a DNA swab kit were among the items found by San Diego deputies in the burned home and garage of James DiMaggio. DiMaggio was shot and killed by FBI agents in Idaho after allegedly kidnapping Hannah Anderson,16, this month. The list of items is included in a search warrant and affidavits CNN affiliate KFMB obtained. It detailed what authorities found in the aftermath of the August 4 fire at DiMaggio's home, about 45 miles east of San Diego in the community of Boulevard, and how investigators believe the fire was started. Hannah Anderson shares more online Hannah Anderson answers questions Rescuing Hannah Anderson Other items found on the nine-page list of things seized from the home and the adjacent garage include incendiary devices, a gas can, rolls of duct tape, used condoms, ammunition, an arson wire and letters from Hannah. Contents of the letters and the handwritten note were not revealed in the affidavit. When specifically asked about the note by KFMB, the sheriff's department deferred. "Many portions of this investigation cannot be discussed," said spokesperson Jan Caldwell. "Sorry this is one if them." Also recovered was a map of Yosemite -- a possible clue as to where DiMaggio intended to take Hannah. The list also contained seemingly benign items such as balloons, a fly swatter and a Popsicle box. The court documents did not specifically tie any of the items to DiMaggio's alleged crimes. DiMaggio flees with Hannah Hannah went missing after cheerleading practice in San Diego County on August 3. The next day, the bodies of her mother, Christina Anderson, 42, and brother, Ethan, 8, were found at the DiMaggio property. Affidavits: Teen's mother, brother 'tortured and killed' That horror spurred a manhunt, which zeroed in on central Idaho after two critical clues: the discovery of DiMaggio's blue Nissan Versa outside the city of Cascade, and a sighting of the pair by horseback riders. One of the horsemen recalled noticing multiple "red flags" during their brief interaction with the pair, including their brand-new camping equipment and the pajama-like bottoms Hannah was wearing. Father Brett Anderson said Thursday that he'd been able to offer "our thanks and our love" to the horseback riders in a phone conversation. "It was a chance encounter, but it did save my daughter's life," he said Thursday. The ordeal ended August 10 after authorities spotted DiMaggio and his teenage captive's campsite near Morehead Lake. Hostage rescue teams had to hike more than two hours to get to the scene, local sheriffs' departments said. Eventually, they got close enough, and an FBI tactical agent fatally shot DiMaggio, before whisking Hannah away. California teen rescued, her alleged abductor killed Family fundraiser Days after being rescued in the Idaho wilderness Hannah attended a fundraiser on Thursday for her and her family near their Southern California home. The teenager could be seen entering the Boll Weevil restaurant in Lakeside, a community of about 20,000 people located 20 miles northeast of San Diego. Hannah didn't speak publicly before entering the building, though her father later did talk to reporters. The media were invited to the fundraiser at the family-friendly restaurant, but were not allowed inside. "This is a small community that we are a part of, and the community came together putting on this great fundraiser for Hannah and hopefully for her future and healing," Brett Anderson said, before he thanked local residents, family and friends, the media and law enforcement. "This is how Lakeside rolls." Speaking Thursday about her condition, Brett Anderson said "she's just happy to be here." "Hannah sends her love," her father said. "She's doing good day by day, and we'll keep moving forward from here." One of her friends, Alyssa Haugum, said from outside Thursday's fundraiser that she was looking forward to seeing Hannah and giving her a hug. They had communicated via Facebook, she said. Haugum described Hannah, whom she knows from school and dance, as strong, funny and "usually really bubbly." "It takes a lot to make her upset," she said of her friend. The entire ordeal was surreal and scary, as it hit so close to home, Haugum said. "It just felt like it was untrue: One day somebody could be with you, and the next day they are missing and you don't know where they're at," Haugum said. Then, alluding to her friend Hannah, she added, "But I knew she was strong. I knew she would come back." www.cnn.com/2013/08/16/us/california-hannah-anderson/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

James DiMaggio family requests DNA samples for Hannah Anderson, her brother(CNN) -- James DiMaggio's family is requesting DNA samples from the family of Hannah Anderson, the 16-year-old girl he's accused of kidnapping and whose mother and brother were found dead in his burned home. The reason? They want to know if he was Hannah and 8-year-old Ethan's biological father, a family spokesman said.
"We are going to be requesting from the Anderson family that we try to get DNA samples from Hannah. And if they have anything left from Ethan, that we get a DNA sample," family spokesman Andrew Spanswick told CNN affiliate KGTV. "There has been a lot of rumors that Jim might be the father of either or both children." Reached by CNN, Spanswick said DiMaggio's sister, Lora, is making the request, but would not elaborate further. A representative for the Anderson family appeared to shoot down the theory. "Brett and Tina Anderson did not meet Mr. DiMaggio until the sixth month of Tina's pregnancy with Hannah. Brett Anderson's DNA was used to identify the body of his dead son Ethan Anderson," the family statement said. Mother, brother laid to rest A complex case There was a time when the Hannah Anderson abduction case seemed clear-cut. DiMaggio, a close Anderson family friend, allegedly kills Hannah's mother and brother, burns his house down, kidnaps Hannah and goes on the run. After a frantic week-long manhunt, he is spotted in the Idaho wilderness and shot dead by an FBI agent. Hannah is safe and reunited with her father. That was on August 10. With each passing day since then, the case has taken on added complexity. On Monday, the Anderson family spokeswoman told CNN that DiMaggio, 40, left a life insurance policy from his job as a telecommunications tech that named Hannah and Ethan's grandmother, Bernice Anderson, as the beneficiary. Stacy Hess, the spokeswoman, did not know the dollar amount but other media outlets put it at around $110,000. "We find it very strange that he has left all this money without any explanation," Spanswick told KGTV, in explaining the need for the DNA tests. "It states specifically that he didn't want to give it to either parent cause he didn't trust them," Spanswick said, referring to Hannah's parents. The Anderson children called DiMaggio "Uncle Jim." One search warrant referred to Hannah's mother as DiMaggio's "best friend's wife." Anderson's letters found at kidnap suspect's home Hannah spotted with captor Then there is this. Hannah was seen in a car with DiMaggio about 20 hours before he allegedly set fire to his house, police said Tuesday. The two were seen in DiMaggio's blue Nissan Versa just after midnight Sunday, August 4, said San Diego County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Jan Caldwell. She confirmed reporting from the Los Angeles Times that the two were spotted at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint. Caldwell did not say what the two were doing together, or if Hannah Anderson was with DiMaggio voluntarily. CNN was unable to get an Anderson family response to this revelation. Actions raise eyebrows Some of Hannah's actions have raised eyebrows in some quarters. A friend of Hannah's told authorities "DiMaggio took her on multiple day trips," according to a search warrant. The same document said phone records indicate the two "called each other approximately 13 times" shortly before both their phones were turned off around 4 p.m. (7 p.m. ET) on August 4. That was around the time that Hannah was picked up from cheerleading practice at Sweetwater High School, the warrant says, while noting it wasn't known who picked her up . The same document says that a fire was reported at around 8 p.m. later that day at DiMaggio's two-story log cabin and a detached garage in Boulevard, California. After battling the fire, authorities found the bodies of the teenager's mother, Christina Anderson, and Ethan. An affidavit claimed that both had been "tortured and killed" by DiMaggio, who then set his home and garage ablaze. Affidavits: Mother, brother 'tortured and killed' A fire captain found Christina Anderson face down in the garage, covered with a tarp, and with a crowbar and what appeared to be blood next to her head. The manhunt An Amber Alert was issued the next day. The ordeal ended about 1,000 miles from where it started, on August 10, when an FBI tactical agent shot and killed DiMaggio in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, about 15 miles outside Cascade, Idaho. As to Hannah, she was physically unharmed and soon returned to her family in Southern California. The teenager hasn't spoken publicly or with reporters since the ordeal. But she did field anonymous questions on the website ask.fm, according to Alan MacNabb, whose son is one of Hannah's closest friends. In those comments, she said DiMaggio had apparently set some kind of a timing device to start the blaze at his home. She also said she did not want to go with her "dad's best friend" and that, had she tried to escape from him, "He would have killed me." Search finds Friend: Hannah speaks about kidnapping on social media San Diego County deputies searching DiMaggio's charred home found a handwritten note, handcuff box, camping equipment, a DNA swab kit, two used condoms and letters from Hannah, according to an affidavit. Contents of the letters and the handwritten note were not revealed in the affidavit. www.cnn.com/2013/08/21/us/hannah-anderson-james-dimaggio-case/index.html?hpt=hp_t2
