UPDATED: Mother, father of missing girl asking anyone with information to contact sheriff

GOLDEN CITY, Mo. — UPDATED 11:56 a.m. — Wendi Jackson, the mother of 12-year-old Adrianna Horton who has been missing since Monday evening, has come to Golden City to help search for her daughter.

"I just want my baby back in my arms," said the Overland Park woman.

James Horton, the father, said his daughter came home from her first day of school in a great mood Monday and then headed to a park a half-block from her home in the afternoon with her sisters, where they were joined by friends.

James said he is certain his daughter would not have run away, and is asking anyone in the community with information to contact the Barton County Sheriff's Department.

"Everyone in the community has been very supportive, the school has been great," he said, noting that even teachers joined in the search last night.

The Barton County Sheriff's Office said Adrianna Horton was last seen getting into a vehicle there about 5 p.m. Monday. The vehicle was stopped about 6:30 p.m. and a suspect was taken into custody but the girl was not with him.

Searchers are using horses, all-terrain vehicles, dogs and a patrol helicopter to search around the small town.

Horton is described as 4-feet-5-inches tall and weighing 70 pounds. She has short brown hair, brown eyes and a fair complexion.

UPDATED 11:06 a.m. — More than 400 trained law enforcement officers, volunteers and others searched Golden City Monday night and early today for a young girl who went missing Monday evening. The search is still continuing.

According to the Barton County Sheriff’s Department, 12-year-old Adrianna Horton of Golden City was playing in the park with friends, who noticed she had gone missing and notified her father, who called 911.

Witnesses also said Horton was observed getting into a vehicle at approximately 5 p.m. Monday. The driver and vehicle were located about 6:30 p.m. The vehicle has been impounded and the man that the Barton County Sheriff’s Department said was a “suspect” is being detained.

“Everyone in the community is working really hard trying to find her,” Barton County Sheriff Mitchell Shaw said this morning. “This is a very family-oriented community.”

UPDATED 10:16 a.m. — The search is intensifying this morning for a missing Golden City girl.

Searchers on horseback, on ATVs and with dogs are covering the ground around the small community. A Missouri State Highway Patrol helicopter with infrared scanning capability also joined in the search this morning.

Search Teams Organized to Look for Adrianna Horton


GOLDEN CITY, Mo. -- Teams of law officers and volunteers are fanning out along a creek in Golden City, Missouri, searching for a missing 12-year-old girl.

Adrianna Horton was last seen about 5:30 pm Monday.

That's when Authorities got a 911 call from Adrianna's father, James Horton.

Adrianna was last seen at Hazel Park in Golden City. She was with family and friends. They alerted the father.

At least one witness told police they saw her get into a pickup truck, but investigators say they are still trying to confirm that from other witnesses.

The majority of the witnesses are Adrianna's age.

About 6:30 p.m. Monday, Barton County deputies located the truck and a suspect, who is male.

He and the truck were found on the other side of town from the park, said Barton County Sheriff Mitchell Shaw.

Investigators confirm the girl's father worked with the suspect.

Law officers say they are familiar with the suspect, and that he lived in Golden City at one point in the past.

His current residence was unclear. Investigators would not say if the suspect is cooperating with questioning.

Sheriff Shaw tells KOLR10 News the the Horton family lives "less than walking distance" from the park.

Investigators say they searched Hazel Park twice and feel they have covered it thoroughly.

The controlled search began about 10:30 Tuesday morning with volunteer teams of first responders, citizens and law officers.

It is focused on Kile Creek, (Muddy Creek, ) also known as the North Fork of Spring River in Barton County.

Today, searchers will move, side by side, down the banks of the creek looking for signs of Adrianna.

As of noon, search organizers say they have 75 volunteers and law officers on foot, 9 on horseback, and another 250 people signed up to help as needed.

A number of searchers are also on ATV's and the Highway Patrol is using its helicopter to search from the air. 15 agencies are involved in the search.

Residents in Golden City are being asked if they see anything at all that looks out of place, call Barton County authorities or 911.

HLN affiliate KSPR reports that the body of Adriaunna Horton's, a missing Missouri girl, was found on Wednesday afternoon. Adriaunna's father told reporters her body was found, but did not give any more information. Hundreds of volunteers have been searching for Adriuanna since she disappeared on Monday night. A spokesman for the Missouri State Highway Patrol would not confirm or deny this report at the time of this writing.


Officials from the Barton County Sheriff's Office confirmed to HLN early Wednesday that they arrested Bobby D. Bourne Jr. and charged him with kidnapping Adriaunna Horton. Adriaunna, 12, was playing at a park near her Golden City, Missouri, home on Monday evening. At about 5 p.m., she was reported missing and witnesses say she got into a vehicle. That vehicle was found approximately an hour and a half later with Bourne Jr. behind the wheel. Bourne Jr. was arrested and the car impounded, but at the time there was no sign of Adriaunna. Bourne Jr. is being held on $1 million bond.


The search for the girl began Monday night after officials in Missouri released an Endangered Person Advisory Alert.

UPDATED: Murder charges filed in disappearance, death of Adriaunna Horton


LAMAR, Mo. — UPDATED, 4:47 p.m.: Charges of murder in the first degree, statutory rape and forcible rape are being filed this afternoon against Bobby D. Bourne, 34, Lockwood, in the death of Adriaunna Horton, 12, of Golden City. The charges are in addition to a kidnapping charge filed against Bourne earlier this week.

The announcement was made by Steven Kaderly, Barton County Prosecuting Attorney.

UPDATE, 3:13 p.m.: Search warrants have been served following the disappearance and death of Adriaunna Horton, 12, of Golden City, earlier this week, according to Barton County Prosecuting Attorney Steven Kaderly.

Kaderly declined to provide details about the warrants, such as where they were served and on what grounds, saying a judge has sealed records in this case.

Normally, search warrants are a matter of public record.

Kaderly also said despite the body having been found in Dade County, "the crime occurred in Barton County."

He did not specify what he meant by "crime."

During a press conference in Lamar this afternoon, authorities declined to address the state of the body, the cause of the death or whether the girl had been sexually assaulted.

The body was found at an unspecified location on private property southeast of Golden City in woods in Dade County.

Dade County Coroner Gary Banta said the victim was clothed and there was only a crude attempt to cover the body with brush and natural cover.

Kaderly also said additional charges could be filed, perhaps yet this afternoon or early next week.

Bobby D. Bourne, 34, Lockwood, is currently facing a kidnapping charge in the disappearance of Horton, who was last seen getting into a vehicle Monday evening at Hazel Park in Golden City. Horton's body was found Wednesday afternoon.

Sgt. Mike Watson with the Missouri Highway Patrol attempted to clear up confusion over the timeline with regard to the girl's disappearance. Authorities now believe Horton was seen getting into a vehicle at Hazel Park at 4:55 p.m. Adriaunna's father, James Horton, called 911 at 5:34 p.m.

At 7:05 p.m., Bourne was stopped by a Barton County deputy on Mill Street in Golden City, a few blocks from where the girl was last seen.

Bourne has been held since then and was taken to the Jasper County jail in Carthage overnight.

Positive identification was done Thursday via a DNA sample taken to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crime lab in Springfield.

UPDATE, 2:58 p.m.: Barton County Sheriff Mitchell Shaw said at a press conference today that Bobby D. Bourne, 34, Lockwood, was moved to the Jasper County jail overnight for a couple of reasons.

He said Barton County has a small jail with limited staffing, and Jasper County has a larger, more secure jail for a high-profile inmate.

He also acknowledged that emotions are running high in the community and there have been threats made against Bourne, but the sheriff would not be specific.

At this time, Bourne is facing a kidnapping charge.

UPDATE, 10:30 a.m.: Authorities with the Jasper County Sheriff's Department have confirmed that Bobby D. Bourne, 34, Lamar, was transferred to the Jasper County jail overnight.

Bourne is facing a kidnapping charge in the case of Adriaunna Horton, 12, who was last seen getting into a vehicle at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Hazel Park in Golden City. Horton's body was found Wednesday afternoon in nearby Dade County.

Derek Walrod, captain with the Jasper County Sheriff's Department, said Barton County officials wanted Bourne transferred to a larger, more secure jail.

Bourne had been on probation related to convictions in Cedar County for assault on an El Dorado Springs police officer, resisting arrest and domestic assault. A probable-cause affidavit states that on Oct. 30, 2011, in a parking lot of a supermarket in El Dorado Springs, he grabbed his girlfriend, Brandy Bench, by her jaw and shoved her.

A police officer responding to the scene arrested Bourne for domestic assault, and he was taken to the El Dorado Springs Police Department, where he got into a scuffle with the officer. During the scuffle, he tried to grab the officer's Taser, according to the affidavit.

In 2012, he was arrested for another domestic assault in Lockwood involving a stepdaughter, according to court records.

A few more details were released late Thursday night about the death of Adriaunna Horton, 12, whose body was found Wednesday after three days of searching.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the body was actually found by law enforcement officers in a wooded area southeast of Golden City, in rural Dade County near the Barton County Line. The identification of the body was confirmed Thursday night.

Horton was reported missing at about 5:30 p.m. Monday and she was last seen getting into a vehicle near Hazel Park in Golden City.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol, the FBI, the Barton County Sheriff's Department, officers with the Southwest Missouri Major Case Squad, and several other area law enforcement and fire agencies, along with several hundred volunteers, searched the past three days until the body was located. The Patrol's helicopter and marine operations officers were also used during the search.

A news conference is scheduled later today in Lamar.

VIDEO: Murder and rape charges filed against Golden City girl’s abductor


LAMAR, Mo. — New charges of rape and murder were filed Friday against Bobby Bourne Jr. in the wake of an autopsy performed on the body of 12-year-old Adriaunna Horton.

Bourne, 34, has been in custody since Monday night on suspicion of having abducted the girl from Hazel’s Park in Golden City. With the discovery of her body and completion of an autopsy, the Barton County prosecutor added charges late Friday afternoon of first-degree murder, forcible rape and statutory rape to the kidnapping count that the suspect already was facing.

Prosecutor Steven Kaderly said at a news conference in Lamar before the filing of the new charges that investigators believe the offenses committed by the suspect all took place in Barton County prior to the disposal of the body in some woods southeast of Golden City in neighboring Dade County.

The body was located by law enforcement officers Wednesday afternoon while about 100 volunteers were conducting a search for the girl northwest of town, creating a mistaken impression among search participants and media alike that she’d been found in the northwest part of the town when, in fact, the body was recovered southeast of the town.

Sgt. Mike Watson, with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, declined at the news conference to be more specific about the location, except to say that it was on private property.

Kaderly announced the new charges in tweets sent out a couple of hours after the news conference. He also noted in the tweets that Associate Circuit Judge Charles Curless, who ordered the court file in the case sealed on Tuesday, had lifted the seal. By that time, however, the courthouse had closed for the weekend and the probable-cause affidavit could not be obtained.

Watson and Barton County Sheriff Mitchell Shaw declined to answer any questions at the news conference about the condition of the girl’s body or the cause of death as determined by an autopsy conducted Thursday morning. Also, the Barton County coroner could not be reached Friday for information on the cause of death.

Dade County Coroner Gary Banta told the Globe that while he attended the scene where the body was discovered, he was not present at the autopsy since the murder is believed to have taken place in Barton County. He said the body was discovered clothed. There had been a somewhat ineffective attempt to conceal the corpse with ground cover, such as limbs, tree bark and brush, Banta said.


Watson said that positive identification of the girl was accomplished through DNA analysis at the state patrol’s crime lab in Springfield. He also clarified some confusion that had developed with respect to the timeline of the girl’s abduction, her father’s 911 call and Bourne’s arrest.

Watson said the girl is believed to have been abducted at the park at 4:55 p.m. James Horton called 911 to report his daughter missing at 5:34 p.m. Bourne’s vehicle was stopped by a sheriff’s deputy on Mill Street in Golden City at 7:05 p.m. and he was taken into custody.

Kaderly acknowledged that some search warrants have been served in the investigation, but he would not specify where. He said that it was his understanding that the judge’s sealing of the court file, which was still in effect at the time of the news conference, applied to search warrant information.



Suspect moved

Bobby Bourne Jr. was moved overnight Thursday from the Barton County Jail in Lamar to the Jasper County Jail in Carthage. Sheriff Mitchell Shaw said the switch was made in part because his jail is small, somewhat understaffed and deemed generally less secure than the jail in Carthage.

Shaw also acknowledged that tensions are running high in the Barton County community and that there have been some threats made concerning the suspect, which contributed to the decision to transfer him to Jasper County. The sheriff declined to be more specific about such threats.
