Missing Virginia Student Hannah Graham May Have Gotten Into Car With Man
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Sep 19, 2014, 6:23 PM ET Missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham went to a bar with an older man and may have gotten into a car with him, and police said today they want to ask that man "what he knows about Hannah." Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo did not publicly identify the man, but said that he is 32, has dreadlocks, is 6-foot-2 and weighs 270 pounds. Police spoke to him this morning when they executed a search warrant and seized his car, but did not feel that they had enough probable cause to arrest him, Longo said. "We know that he purchased alcohol (in the restaurant) and we know that Hannah Graham was with him. We also know that within 15 minutes he was gone from that bar and Hannah Graham was with him," Longo said. "People saw Hannah and people saw him, and people saw them together. And it's entirely possible, we believe, that Hannah Graham may have gotten into his vehicle," the chief said. Longo asked for anyone to call police if they saw Graham get into the man's 1998 burnt orange Chrysler coupe. While the person is not in custody, "We know who he is and we are aware of where he is," Det. Sgt. Jim Mooney said. "I'm not calling him a suspect," Longo said. "We're interested in him, interested in talking to him, interested in what he knows about Hannah." The chief would not say whether he believed Graham was still alive. "I will always be hopeful until we find Hannah," he said. Longo said he spoke with Graham's parents shortly before the news conference. "They want their daughter back. They want to know what happened." Longo held his news conference after executing three search warrants on the car, an apartment and phone. e said that today's searches "absolutely" marked a major break in the case. The first warrant was a search and seizure warrant for a vehicle which was executed shortly after midnight. When police arrived at the apartment building and seized the car, a person connected to the car was in his apartment with two others. Police identified those individuals, but the officer did not feel he had the grounds to detain the individuals, Longo said. After seizing the car and taking it to an undisclosed location for the full search, investigators developed probable cause and sought approvals for the two other warrants. Police arrived back at the apartment shortly after 10 a.m. and the three individuals were no longer inside, Longo said. Police had also released four clips of surveillance footage from local businesses that showed Graham, 18, walking around in the early hours of Saturday morning. She was last heard from around 1:20 a.m. Saturday when she texted friends, allegedly saying that she was headed for a party but was unsure of where she was. A person of interest described by police Thursday came from a man who was seen following Graham on surveillance footage. That man told police that he was concerned about Graham because she looked "physically distressed," but he left when he reportedly saw another man approach her and put his arm around her. abcnews.go.com/US/missing-virginia-student-hannah-graham-car-man/story?id=25621541

Clothes taken in search for missing UVa student Hannah Graham Sep 23rd 2014 1:14PMCHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- In a second search of the home of the man believed to be the last person seen with a missing University of Virginia student, officials said they took pieces of clothing, but they would not elaborate on the importance of the items Tuesday. The clothing was found Monday at Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr.'s apartment, Charlottesville Police Capt. Gary Pleasants told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. Authorities first searched the 32-year-old's car and apartment Friday, and Pleasants said information that came up during the investigation led to a second search of the apartment. He would not give details about the clothing or elaborate on the search.
Police have said they hope to receive lab results late Tuesday from items recovered during the initial searches, and authorities are still trying to locate the campus employee to arrest him on reckless driving charges. Matthew, a patient technician in the operating room at the university's medical center, hasn't been charged in the disappearance, but authorities say they want to talk to him about 18-year-old Hannah Graham, the sophomore from northern Virginia who has been missing since Sept. 13. Police have not offered any details about how the two may be connected. Pleasants said authorities have not had contact with Matthew since Saturday, when he stopped by the Charlottesville police station with several family members for about an hour and asked for a lawyer. He was provided with one but left in a vehicle at a high rate of speed that endangered other drivers and led to the reckless driving charges, Charlottesville police Chief Timothy Longo has said. Virginia State Police officers were conducting surveillance of the vehicle at the time but did not pursue Matthew, a spokeswoman said. Pleasants said investigators have questioned Matthew's mother and uncle, who accompanied him to the police station. He added that search crews on Monday covered areas in the southern part of the city that had not previously been searched. Authorities on Monday also released a wanted poster on Matthew. It says the 6-foot-2, 270-pound man was last reported on Sunday as driving his sister's 1997 light blue Nissan Sentra, and notes that he is said to have contacts in Virginia, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.
Police said they have focused on Graham's movements the night of Sept. 12 and into the early morning hours of Sept. 13. Graham, a sophomore from northern Virginia, met friends at a restaurant for dinner, stopped by two parties at off-campus housing units and left the second party alone, police have said. Surveillance videos showed her walking, and at some points running, past a pub and a service station and then onto the Downtown Mall, a seven-block pedestrian strip lined with shops and restaurants. According to family members and police, Graham is an alpine skier and plays the alto saxophone. Organizers of a candlelight vigil last week at the university handed out her favorite candy, Starburst. Longo said he learned from visiting with Graham's parents that the graduate of West Potomac High School earned straight A's six years in a row. Graham's disappearance has sent a ripple of fear through the quiet college town of Charlottesville. Students have said they've begun walking in pairs at night and are paying closer attention to their surroundings. More than 1,000 volunteers also participated in a weekend search for Hannah Graham, according to authorities. www.aol.com/article/2014/09/23/clothes-taken-in-search-for-missing-uva-student-hannah-graham/20966394/

Suspect Charged with Abduction with Intent to Defile in Graham Case Posted: Sep 23, 2014 8:45 AM CDT Updated: Sep 23, 2014 8:56 PM CDTCHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr., previously a person of interest in the case of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham's disappearance, is now charged with abduction with intent to defile.Charlottesville police announced the new charge, a class 2 felony, at a press conference Tuesday night. Matthew, 32, is now wanted on that charge as well as two charges of reckless driving. Police believe he was the last person seen with Graham, an 18-year-old, second-year student from Northern Virginia who has been missing since September 13. Police have confirmed that articles of clothing were taken from Matthew's apartment during a search Monday. Authorities first searched his apartment and seized his car Friday, and Charlottesville Police Captain Gary Pleasants says information that came up during the investigation led to a second search on Monday. "Through the investigation we determined there were other items we needed to look for and that's why a second search warrant. We might not have known about those items during the first search warrant. Things change,” Pleasants said.
At Tuesday night's press conference, Charlottesville Police Chief Tim Longo did not describe any of the evidence collected in this case, but said the investigation is ongoing. He also stressed that police are still looking for Graham. Graham was last seen with Matthew at Tempo restaurant off the Charlottesville downtown mall between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13. According to police, Matthew went to the Charlottesville Police Department Saturday with several family members. He asked for a lawyer, and was given one, but left without speaking to officers. After he left the Police Department, Virginia State Police were following Matthew in Albemarle County. When he fled at a high rate of speed, police had to end surveillance. Police say the car Matthew was driving was a 1997 light blue Nissan Sentra with a Virginia license plate of VAC 4575. Police have issued two warrants for him on charges of misdemeanor reckless driving, having allegedly run stop signs and traffic signals. Police announced the abduction with intent to defile charge Tuesday, and released a new wanted poster. Matthew has been employed as a nursing assistant at UVA Medical Center since August. He was also a part-time volunteer assistant for the Covenant School football team. The school's headmaster sent a letter to parents Saturday, before the abduction charge was filed, making it clear Matthew would no longer be working with the football program "while this matter is being clarified and resolved." The letter also assured parents Matthew went through the normal background check before becoming a volunteer. Matthew used to work as a taxi driver in Charlottesville. John Amato, who sometimes supervised him, describes him as courteous, polite, and quiet. “Normal guy, really nice guy, took care of the people. Not once received a complaint. Every time, the times that I did hear about him driving, the clients were very happy with him,” Amato said. He says he hopes the public will consider him innocent until proven guilty. Digital billboards with Graham's photo and information are now popping up all over the state following a request from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The Outdoor Advertising Association of America donated 12, full-color digital billboards in Fredericksburg, Richmond, Hampton, Newport News, Colonial Heights and Hopewell. Wow. That has everything listed! Past sexual assault cases, and possible cases where he may be involved. This is incredible. The DNA from Morgan's case linked him to the Washington DC rape case! Fortunately for that woman, she lived through it.

Neighbors of Jesse Matthew's mother speak out about multiple investigations Residents in Nelson County describe what they went through when authorities first started looking for Jesse MatthewJesse Matthew is a name you've been hearing for weeks now. He is the man accused of abducting missing UVA student Hannah Graham. Matthew was charged with attempted murder and rape this week from a case in Fairfax that dates back to 2005. Right now, WDBJ7 is waiting for results from the medical examiner's office to see if human remains found this weekend in Albemarle County are Graham's. Residents that live near close to the crime scene have talked about the investigation and now we're hearing from neighbors who live close to Matthew's mother. WDBJ7’s Nadine Maeser ventured out Tuesday afternoon in search of Matthew's mother to get her side of the story. She wasn’t at her Nelson County home, but neighbors said she hasn't been there for a few days. After speaking with some of them, we're learning Matthew's run-in with the law is affecting those that live across the county line. Tucked away off Route 29 in Nelson County is a small and peaceful community. "Ugh my name is Andrew Wells,” said neighbor Andrew Wells. “They call me AD." It’s a paved road where everyone knows everyone called Wells Lane. Wells said just about everyone that lives along it is a Wells. "Everyone except Matthew,” he said. “They just moved in." Wells family started renting a home to Jesse’s mom about a year ago. Wells said Matthew's mother has always been a good neighbor, but things changed when authorities came up their quiet, little street looking for him. He said it was a chaotic scene and one his family had never seen before. "Helicopters, police, dogs, everything,” he said. “They did a lot of searching all around." Wells admits he hasn't seen her since authorities came looking for Matthew. No one was home when WDBJ7 got to the home on Tuesday. A ‘No trespassing’ sign sends a clear message to visitors. "It's taking a toll on her,” he said. “People don't look at her the same way." Wells has heard the charges are stacking up against his neighbor's son. Unfortunately, he knows how these kinds of situations tend to pan out. He was working on Anchorage Farm in Albemarle County when Morgan Harrington's body was found in 2010. "The part that hurt me so bad, you do something like that and you kill a person, I hope and pray he didn't do it. I mean, that's what I pray, and then you take a person and throw them out in a field like a dog or something,” he said. “It's sad." Wells is preparing for the worst and hoping for the best when it comes to Hannah Graham. "All these years I've been living, and I'm 69, nothing like this happen has hit so close to home." Jesse Matthew did not live with his mother in Nelson County, according to neighbors, but they did see him every now and then. www.wdbj7.com/news/local/neighbors-of-jesse-matthews-mother-speak-out-about-multiple-investigations/29263116 That's where alexis lived..
